As owner of Optimum Choices, I am sorry for this poor customer service. I
apologize to everyone that has experienced any of the above. Please forgive me—it was not because we do not value our good returning clients. Due to an
accidental fall in June, 2012, in which I sustained a concussion, the resultant
Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) temporarily left me with brain
impairment. I have been unable to function as efficiently as before. My recovery has
required treatment from more than 4 doctors (M.D., O.D., D.C., Ph.D.) and 4
therapists (occupational, cognitive, vision and bodywork therapy). Ironically,
the very last e-newsletter I wrote in October 2012
(It Takes 9 Months/Weeks) discussed
how long it takes certain parts of the body to heal. Based on my personal
experience with the MTBI, I added another body part, the Brain. It can take the
brain 6 months to 5 years to heal from even a mild fall/accident and subsequent
concussion.
Even though I cannot confidently say I
am 50% recovered, the good news is that I am making slow progress. All my
doctors and therapists say that any progress is good news. The other good news is
that I hired an Administrative Assistant to help me run Optimum Choices during
this very difficult time. Michelle is now helping me process the high volume of

Clients sometimes
ask: I have been feeding grain-free dry kibble and giving
bio-algae concentrates (BAC) for the last 3 years. Why did my pet
get _________?
Answer: Many of our
clients feed what they consider the best and most expensive grain-free
dry kibble, use minimal vaccinations and even use one of our “wholistic”
products. When their 10+ year old pet comes down with a serious
degenerative condition they ask, “What did I do wrong?” While all the
above steps can help prevent some situations, there are others which
cannot be prevented.
Because
of a lack of diversity in the gene pool, we see a lot more purebred pets
with genetically-related issues than mixed breeds. Research shows that
while bio-algae concentrates can optimize healthy DNA reproduction and
neutralize some genetic issues, there are obviously others which are too
great to overcome. Adopting a mixed-breed pet from a shelter, as we did,
can reduce the risk of genetically-linked health issues.
Over-vaccination
effects can last for generations. Natural-rearing, raw-feeding breeders
tell us it can
take 5-7 generations of no vaccinations to undo the
effects of over-vaccination from the parents. So, even if one practices
minimal vaccinations with your current pet there could still be
ramifications from previous generations. This is one drawback to
adopting shelter pets—the shelter will vaccinate the pet when it comes
in to the shelter and the health history or ancestry of your pet is
often unknown. They could come from many generations of kibble-fed,
over-vaccinated pets, which will impact your pet's health. The only way
to avoid this is to purchase a purebred pet from a natural-rearing,
raw-feeding breeder, but then you risk the purebred genetically-related
health issues. Also, with so many pets in shelters being euthanized for
lack of homes, we prefer to adopt our pets from shelters or rescue
organizations.
The pet food
preferences recommended by most holistic vets are:
Raw food (fresh
or frozen)
Freeze-dried raw
food
Home-cooked food
(if balanced properly)
Premium canned
food
Notice that kibble is
not in this list, not even grain-free, super premium kibble. Most
holistic vets do
not recommend feeding dry kibble at all to dogs or
cats. They feel it is the least nutritious pet food for a carnivore. It
is like feeding fruit- or vegetable-flavored cookies to your child and
wondering why they are unhealthy, obese, and have a host of digestive
disorders and diabetes after 10 years. Other inappropriate ingredients
in dry kibble can include GMO
(Genetically Modified Organism) wheat, corn and soy. Grain-free dry kibble
still has too much carbohydrates for a carnivore—the company just
substitutes a different starch for grains. Is just switching to one of
the above choices sufficient to prevent health problems? No,
natural-rearing breeders will tell you it takes at least 5-7 generations
of raw feeding to reverse the genetic damage done by dry kibble-fed
parents.
We
adopted Iris, a domestic shorthaired tabby cat, at 6 years old from a
rescue group. We transitioned her from a
dry kibble diet to
raw food and
added our bio-algae concentrates product. At age 8 she developed
advanced gastrointestinal lymphoma (cancer). Why did she develop cancer
when we were giving her a perfect diet and bio-algae concentrates? We
feel that 2 years was not adequate to overcome her previous poor diet as
well as numerous vaccinations by her previous owner. And we don't know
how her parents or ancestors were fed or vaccinated. The vet told us
there were no effective conventional or holistic treatments for this
type of cancer and recommended hospice care or euthanasia. Chemotherapy
would only buy a little time but not cure her. Instead, we tried all the
“wholistic” means we knew and Iris fully recovered. She is alive and

Statistics
show nearly 50% of older pets will get cancer. If you do not want your
pet to become a statistic, do something different than the average pet
guardian. Do not wait for symptoms to show up or blow up. Feed what
Nature designed our carnivorous pets to
eat:
raw meats, bones and
organs. Next best is premium canned or home-cooked food with minimal
vegetables, fruits and carbohydrates (such as grains), if any. To learn
