SLO (Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy)—Impossible Veterinary Outcome

SLO (Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy) is thought to be an autoimmune disease where the body mistakenly attacks its own toe nails with antibodies. It can be very painful for the pet to walk, bleeding sometimes occurs, as the nails deteriorate and eventually come off. If the claws do regrow, they will be misshapen, dry, brittle and crumbly. Suspected causes are genetics, vaccinations, allergies, immune mediated origins and even hypothyroidism are a possibility. Treatment often includes antibiotics for any bacterial or fungal infections, steroids, Pentoxifylline and nutrition, such as Vitamin B, Vitamin E, biotin and Omega oils. SLO is considered a lifelong-illness, which may flair up at any time but is manageable with treatment.

While our clients have had a fair amount of success with other autoimmune conditions such as IMHA and AIHA, they have had more success with SLO. That may be because the anemia conditions, IMHA and AIHA, are so devastating that 50% of dogs die within two weeks of diagnosis. With SLO, the veterinarian has more time for testing in order to make an accurate diagnosis and the dog’s body has more time to allow medications and nutritional supplements to work. Because the disease attacks the nails it unfolds over a period of time which felt very long and any effects of healing take even longer because of the slow growth of nails and any visual improvement. First, one nail pulled away from the quick and lifted up like the hood on a VW beetle. It was extremely painful and Tessa would cry out in pain if she tried to walk. Because she had gone through two TPLO surgeries for cruciate tears I, at first, assumed that was the problem. I kept trying to figure out the source of the pain and I found the lifted nail covering before her vet appointment. The vet numbed her nail bed, removed the nail covering, and found that 3 other nails had begun to separate from the core. It took many months, actually a couple of years for it to all play out as nails came off over several months until every nail had come off and of course then they began to grow back in slowly and in the order they had come off.
