Colorado Association of Animal Massage & Bodywork

Lisa Speaker of Dogma and Margaret Auld-Louie of Optimum Choices are developing a local chapter of the IAAMB, International Association of Animal Massage and Bodywork (IAAMB). This will be a Colorado state organization that meets quarterly to network, mentor, discuss and affect state legislation and to work on advancing credibility for our professions. We would like to have a speaker at each meeting so that it will be an educational experience as well. We are calling this new organization CAAMB - Colorado Association of Animal Massage and Bodywork.

We have now set a date and location for the first meeting as follows:

Tuesday, August 16, 7:00 pm
Canine Rehabilitation & Conditioning Group (CRCG) in Englewood, CO
Click here to go to the CRCG website for location and map

Lisa Speaker will talk about CAAMB, including how to get involved and how it can benefit your practice.  Margaret Auld-Louie will talk on Why All Dogs Need Massage, including demonstrations of common structural imbalances that most dogs have. We will also have time for networking and discussing the future of our organization. We will have information on the International Association of Animal Massage & Bodywork, which CAAMB will be a chapter of.

We believe that forming the CAAMB is a very important step in advancing the credibility of our practice on a local level and hope all Colorado Animal Body Workers will join us!  If you are a Colorado animal body worker or energy worker and have an interest, please fill out our online form or send e-mail to Margaret@OptimumChoices.com or call us at (303) 271-1649.

Wolfberries offer super nutrition for optimal health

by Russell Louie

Would you like to have enough energy for your business life and family? Are you tired of getting colds and flu every season? Do you have a chronic illness you would like to see improved? Do you want to stay and look young? Wolfberries are an ancient Chinese secret newly discovered in the West that can provide these benefits through their super nutrition.

Wolfberries (Lycium barbarum) have been used for over 5,000 years in China (called Goji berries in China). There are over 80 species of Lycium berries worldwide and 17 different species of wolfberries alone but there is only one Ningxia wolfberry. The Yellow River on the West Elbow Plateau, known for its fertile silt deposits, delivers minerals and nutrition to the pristine environment of the Ningxia province. This, in addition to plenty of sunlight and just the right temperature difference, has earned this area the title of "herbal medicine valley". There are 400% more centenarians (people age 100+) living in the Ningxia province than the rest of China. Chinese Olympic athletes considered the wolfberries (Goji berries) to be their "secret weapon" for endurance and stamina. The wolfberries from the Ningxia province are so treasured that there is a two week celebration in China for this most nutrient dense food on the planet. Wolfberries were the peasant’s "ginseng" because they could harvest the wolfberries freely and could not afford the ginseng root.

 Wolfberries have:

  •  Higher beta-carotene than carrots

  • Higher calcium than cauliflower

  •  More Vitamin C than oranges

  • 18 amino acids

  •  21 essential minerals

  • 16% protein by volume

  •  Antioxidants and polysaccharides (containing all eight essential glyconutrients)

Scientific studies have shown wolfberries to:

  •  Improve vision

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Reduce cholesterol levels by 52%

  • Reduce triglycerides by 71%

  • Raise HDL cholesterol by 58%

  • Increases glutathione in the liver by 50%

  • Lower blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic)

The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) test, developed by USDA researchers at Tufts University, is one of the most valuable methods for measuring the ability of antioxidants to absorb oxygen radicals. According to the ORAC test, the Ningxia wolfberry is one of the highest known antioxidant whole foods. This means the wolfberry has unsurpassed ability to absorb the bad free radicals that attack the body and contribute to cancer and aging. The most common and worst free radical is the superoxide radical. Elevated superoxides have been linked to asthma, allergies, heart disease, hepatitis, cancer and most chronic diseases. Therefore, there are two tests: the ORAC and S-ORAC. Here is a graph comparing the ORAC values for different foods.

Plants carry most of their antioxidants and polysaccharides in their peel. Whole wolfberries have shown far better antioxidant activity than either the isolated polysaccharide or other extracts of wolfberries. Of any food, the Ningxia wolfberry has the highest content of potassium, a mineral with proven cardio-protective effects. Young Living Essential Oils now offers a whole wolfberry juice blend called NingXia RedTM that contains 51% wolfberry puree by volume. This whole food puree uses the peel, pulp and juice of the prized Chinese Ningxia wolfberry. It also contains blueberry, pomegranate and raspberry juices as well as lemon and orange essential oils. Pomegranates are high in quercetin and ellagic acid while wolfberries are high in polyphenols and polysaccharides. There is tremendous synergy between the wolfberry and pomegranates juices.

The antioxidant power of NingXia RedTM juice has been proven in independent tests. ORAC and S-ORAC tests were done on randomly selected consumer-bottled product by independent third-party Brunswick Laboratories. Results of the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) test:

What makes Young Living’s NingXia RedTM unique among all the other juices on the market?

  • Uses only wolfberries from the "herbal medicine valley" Ningxia province in China
  • Contains only whole food juices. No extracts, concentrates or chemically altered compounds
  • Manufactured using the proprietary Nutrient-Guard process developed after 7 years of research. This process preserves the bioactivity of enzymes, vitamin C and the rest of the nutrients by cooling the juice quickly after the heating of pasteurization (similar to flash pasteurization)

The wolfberries in the juice have the Green Certificate equivalent to organic certification, meaning it contains no fertilizers, pesticides or heavy metals and no sulfites, dyes or irradiation have been used.

The ingredients in NingXia RedTM juice offer the following benefits:

  • Ningxia Wolfberry puree--highest antioxidant food, rich in immune-stimulating polysaccharides, ellagic acid, cerebrosides, pyrroles, and other unique phytochemicals

  • Blueberry juice--rich in proanthocyanidins. Tufts University studies show that it protects blood cells against free radical oxidation and slows brain aging; University of Mainz studies shows that it protects cell DNA

  • Pomegranate juice--3 times the antioxidant activity of green tea or red wine, reduces oxidized cholesterol by 40%

  • Raspberry juice--high levels of ellagic acid

  • Lemon and Orange Essential Oils--high in limonene which combats cell mutation

The dried Ningxia wolfberries have a low food glycemic index of 29. Studies done by Young Living showed 50 g of NingXia RedTM juice raised serum glucose levels less than half as much as a control of 50 g of glucose. This is important even for non-diabetics as a high-glycemic diet can accelerate aging and triple the risk of heart disease. (If you are a diabetic, consult your medical professional before ingesting dried wolfberries or NingXia RedTM juice.)

The following are my personal experiences with the new NingXia RedTM juice and dried wolfberries:

  • After four days at the Young Living convention, I was falling asleep during the morning lectures. I took a one ounce shot of NingXia RedTM juice and was able to stay awake the rest of the day without the afternoon "caffeine" slump.

  • Snacking on dried wolfberries helped me stay alert and awake during the tiring 9-hour drive from Salt Lake City to Denver.

  • I eat a teaspoon of the dried wolfberries after each meal which greatly helps my acid reflux condition (heartburn).

NingXia RedTM has helped people with such health challenges as asthma, allergies, liver problems, kidney disease, stomach illness, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia and poor eyesight. The super nutrition in it helps prevent degenerative diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and cancer and promotes longevity. Just one ounce per day can make a significant difference in your health.

Discovery of the Ultimate Superfood: How the Ningxia Wolfberry and Four Other Whole Foods Help Combat Heart Disease, Cancer, Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Diabetes and More

by Gary Young ND, Ronald Lawrence MD, PhD and Marc Schreuder

ISBN: 0-943685-44-3

Publisher: Essential Science Publishing, www.essentialscience.net

Reviewed by Margaret Auld-Louie

This book, which was just published in July this year, contains extensive scientific information about the health benefits of the Ningxia wolfberry. If you want to know the science behind the benefits of the wolfberry fruit and the NingXia RedTM juice created from it, this book provides it in great detail. Every chapter is footnoted with extensive scientific references.

First it describes how Gary Young, President of Young Living Essential Oils, discovered the wolfberry and how he found more long-lived people in Ningxia, China than anywhere else in the world renowned for the longevity of its residents. Young Living became the first major importer of wolfberries into the USA and is the exclusive importer of them from the Ningxia province, where they contain the most nutrients. The book explains how free radicals promote aging and illness and the benefits of whole foods vs. isolated supplements. Charts are included detailing the nutritional components of wolfberries vs. other foods, including beta carotene, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, B vitamins, fiber, amino acids and others. The astounding antioxidant levels of wolfberries are also documented.

There are numerous chapters detailing the many scientific studies, both Western and Asian, done with wolfberries and wolfberry extracts, as applicable to different aspects of health such as immunity, cancer, heart, vision, liver, skin, diabetes, obesity and depression. The studies show wide-ranging and impressive benefits from wolfberries. The scientific benefits of the other components of NingXia RedTM juice are then documented, including ellagic acid (high in wolfberries and raspberries), pomegranates, blueberries and citrus.

The one chapter that we don't totally agree with is "9 Secrets to Longevity". It recommends avoiding dairy products as they are high in "artery clogging saturated fats" and red meat because it increases the risk of colon cancer and heart disease. According to Mary Enig, PhD, scientific expert on fats and oils and Vice President of the Weston Price Foundation,  arteries are not clogged by eating saturated fats but by eating processed and hydrogenated vegetable oils that create free radicals, leading to inflammation. Many health experts these days are stating that inflammation (caused by vegetable oils, sugar, toxins and bacteria) is the main cause of heart disease. Saturated fats provide important fat-soluble vitamins such as A and D and were prized by traditional cultures for their health benefits. They contain essential nutrients needed for fertility and pregnancy as well as growing a healthy brain and nervous system in children. Sally Fallon, President of the Weston Price Foundation states that the studies linking red meat to cancer did not separate out the effects of processed red meats (such as lunch meats) from non-processed red meats. Unfortunately, so few people avoid processed meats in Western societies that it would be hard to find enough people to study who eat healthy red meats but not processed meats. Organic raw dairy products and red meat purchased at health food stores, particularly from pasture-fed animals, can be very health promoting and have been eaten for thousands of years by traditional societies (click here to read our article on this).  These societies enjoyed good health and longevity until they adopted a Western diet containing processed foods.

Finally, the book ends with a chapter explaining the careful processing of the NingXia RedTM juice to maintain bioactivity and why the other ingredients in it were chosen. The method of processing is important because some super nutritional juices on the market no longer contain super nutrition after bottling and processing. The nutrients have been destroyed by the bottling process. The fact that the nutrients are preserved in NingXia RedTM juice is proven in the Appendix, which displays independent third party laboratory reports and graphs showing the nutrition and antioxidant levels of both wolfberries and NingXia RedTM juice vs. other leading nutritional juice products, based on testing of randomly selected consumer-bottled product.
