Oil of the Month: Di-Tone

A blend of therapeutic-grade essential oils noted for their soothing effects on digestion. As a dietary supplement, Di-Tone is an invaluable digestive aid.

How to Use
Apply topically over the stomach or feet and in a compress on the abdomen.

Ingredients
Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), ginger (Ziniber officinale), peppermint (Mentha piperita), juniper (Juniperus osteoperma and/or J. scopulorum), anise (Pimpinella anisum), fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), and patchouly (Pogostemon cablin).

The following information is from the Essential Desk Reference:

These oils are blended to assist in relieving digestive problems, such as an upset stomach, belching, heartburn, and bloating. Massage a drop or two on the outer ear to help alleviate morning sickness. Di-Tone has been found to rid animals of parasites after application to their feet. It may also help dispel parasites by massaging and placing a compress across the stomach.

Contains:
Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) has been used in Europe for its antimicrobial and antiseptic functions. It helps to reduce dyspepsia, intestinal spasms, and urinary tract infection. It may reduce premenstrual discomfort and nerve pain. It is antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, antiviral, antibacterial, and prevents fermentation.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is used for relief from motion sickness, arthritis, rheumatism, sprains, muscle aches and pains, congestion, coughs, sinusitis, sore throats, diarrhea, colic, indigestion, loss of appetite, fever, flu, chills, and infectious disease.

Juniper (Juniperus osteosperma and/or J. scopulorum) may work as a detoxifier and cleanser, and may promote improved nerve and kidney function. It is also beneficial for the skin in reducing dermatitis, eczema, and acne. Juniper has been used for obesity and cellulite.

Anise (Pimpinella anisum) is antispasmodic, antiseptic, stimulates the increase of bile from the liver, expels worms, increases lactation, and helps calm gall bladder contractions. It may help with painful menstruation and irregularity, problems with menopause, dyspepsia, spastic colitis, flatulence, indigestion, lung congestion, vomiting, asthmatic bronchitis, and intestinal pain. According to Gattefossé, it is a good digestive aid.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is antiseptic and stimulating to the circulatory and respiratory systems. It is antispasmodic, antiseptic, and used for flatulence and vomiting. It is stimulating to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. With its hormone-like activity, it may help facilitate childbirth and increase lactation after birthing. Fennel has been used to soothe the stomach and is offered in other countries after meals to aid digestion.

Patchouly
(Pogostemon cablin) was used in India in ancient times as a trade commodity because of its earthy, musty fragrance and its ability to mask many different odors. East Indian people use patchouly to fragrance their clothing and their homes because of its natural insecticidal and anti- nfectious properties. Legends indicate that it represented money, and those who possessed it were considered to be wealthy. Patchouly is very beneficial for the skin and may help prevent wrinkles or chapped skin. It is a general tonic and stimulant and helps the digestive system. It is also antimicrobial, antiseptic, and helps relieve itching. Patchouly maybe used for diarrhea or constipation.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is one of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion. It is in Di-Tone to alleviate flatulence, indigestion, stomach pains, and diarreaha. Jean Valnet, M.D., studied the beneficial effects of peppermint on the liver and respiratory systems. Daniel Penöél, M.D., reports that it may help to reduce fevers, candida, nausea, vomiting, and strengthen the respiratory system. Adding peppermint to drinking water helps cool body temperature during hot weather.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) works well for purification. It is powerful in the regeneration of connective tissue. It is a vasodilator, anti-inflammatory, sedative, and supportive to the digestive system. A study in Phytotherapy Research showed that lemongrass had strong antifungal properties when applied topically. It may also help increase the flow of oxygen and uplift the spirit

Safety Data: If pregnant or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician prior to use. May be irritating to those with sensitive skin. Avoid eye contact. In case of accidental contact, put a few drops of any pure vegetable oil in the eye and call your doctor if necessary. Never use water.

Massage 2 or 3 drops on the paws of your animals to expel parasites. Parasites may also be dispelled by massaging or placing a compress across the stomach. Add 1 or 2 drops to 8 ounces of water as a dietary supplement. In case of an upset stomach, Di-Tone may be applied on location.

Testimonial

While writing this newsletter, I experienced severe intestinal cramps of unknown cause after lunch which made it difficult to do anything. When I got home in the evening, I put some drops of Di-Tone, diluted with mixing oil, on my lower abdomen and the cramps soon began diminishing and I was able to eat supper and do my normal household chores.

Improve your digestion with Royaldophilus

We have found for our own health and the health of our animals, that a good source of probiotics (good bacteria) is essential in our diet, in addition to the enzymes and nutrients in BioSuperfood. Young Living Essential Oils produces a probiotic product called Royaldophilus that we have had excellent success with both for ourselves and our pets (dog and cat).

We were particularly impressed with this product after seeing our elderly cat, Connie, get well from a mystery illness when we added this to her diet. Although Connie was on a good raw diet supplemented with BioSuperfood formula F3 (the strongest formula), she became sick last November. We don't know what was wrong with her—she had a strange combination of symptoms including frequent belching, diminished appetite, lethargy and depression. She also had something wrong with her throat that made her unable to meow and caused her to occasionally gag/cough like something was stuck in her throat. Our theory is that she may have had difficulty transitioning to an all-raw diet after a lifetime of commercial, cooked pet food. We started giving her Royaldophilus, mixed in with her food and she immediately started improving. After a few weeks, she was back to her normal self and able to meow again, with no more cough. (Note: Royaldophilus is not a substitute for proper veterinary care.)

Although Royaldophilus is derived from milk, it is well tolerated by milk-sensitive individuals. We are both sensitive to cow's milk but have no problem with Royaldophilus. Young Living produces this from milk because it implants better in humans than the synthetic, milk-free probiotics on the market. With Royaldophilus, once it is well implanted, you don't need to keep taking it forever, unlike the synthetic probiotics.

Following is the information on Royaldophilus from the Essential Desk Reference:

Royaldophilus is an outstanding source of Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus cultures required for optimum health. Derived from whole milk, these friendly bacteria are our first-line defense against disease and fungus overgrowth in the gastrointestinal system. Excessive use of antibiotics and other drugs, chlorinated water, and processed foods reduces the number of friendly bacteria in our intestines, which can lead to systemic yeast infection (Candida).

Currently in the U.S., about 70 percent of females and 30 percent of males suffer from some form of Candida overgrowth. Acidophilus may remain potent for several weeks without refrigeration; however, it is recommended that it be refrigerated before opening the bottle and kept refrigerated at less than 40 degrees. It is unwise to freeze acidophilus as this may affect its potency.

Acidophilus works with the enzymes to digest our food. It also aids the growth of beneficial intestinal flora. When we have a good enzyme base, acidophilus will complement enzyme production. It is extremely important for acidophilus to implant on the intestinal wall for the returning of intestinal flora. Acidophilus lactobacillus bifidus derived from milk is the only form recognized and accepted by the human body. The whole milk acidophilus used in Royaldophilus provides greater culture and inhibits allergy reaction.

Plantain reduces digestive problems and is very soothing to irritable bowel problems where intestinal flora is absent. This formula has proven to be superior to all forms of acidophilus.

Contents
Lactobacillus and bifidus cultures contain the best natural digestive aid, acidophilus, which has many benefits, including correcting lactose intolerance, eliminating bad breath and acne, reducing cholesterol, inhibiting Candida, and preventing yeast infection.

Plantain has been used for bleeding of the lungs and stomach, consumption, and dysentery.

How to Use
Take one to two capsules for maintenance. Under heavy stress or when traveling, it may be necessary to double or triple the amount. Best taken on an empty stomach.

Ingredients
One capsule contains plantain, lemon pectin, magnesium stearate, 250 million lactobacillus and bifidus cultures and gelatin.

On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals

by Turid Rugaas

ISBN: 0967479606

Click picture to order from Dogwise

This small book contains a wealth of information on how to interpret and use the signals that dogs use to calm each other down. The author, Turid Rugaas, is a Norwegian dog trainer who explains how to use these signals to understand your dog better and develop a better relationship with your dog. Without being educated in these signals, we typically don't see or we misinterpret them. For instance, yawning usually means boredom or tiredness in humans but in dogs it is often used to calm down other dogs. Knowing that, we can understand our dogs better and use this signal ourselves to help calm them in stressful situations. The following quote from the introduction gives the essence of Rugaas' theory on calming signals:

Dogs, being flock animals, have a language for communication with each other. Canine language in general consists of a large variety of signals using body, face, ears, tail, sounds, movement and expression...If we study the signals dogs use with each other and use them ourselves, we increase our ability to communicate with our dogs. Most noteworthy of all canine signals are the calming signals, which are used to maintain a healthy social hierarchy and resolution of conflict within the flock. These are skills which, when carried over to our own interactions with dogs, can be highly beneficial to our relationship.

Rugaas has also created a videotape on calming signals which can be purchased from Amazon.com. While the videotape has the picture and sound quality of a home video, the information in it is priceless. It brings the book to life, as Rugaas shows dogs using the various calming signals.
