This month we feature one of the most universal oils—lavender. Lavender is
called the "Swiss Army knife" of the essential oils because one can use it on
anything. The French scientist René Gatefossé
was the first to discover lavender's ability to promote tissue regeneration and
speed wound healing when he severely burned his arm in a laboratory accident. He
plunged his arm into the nearest bowl of liquid which happened to be lavender
oil and he was amazed at how quickly his arm healed, with no scarring. Today
lavender is recognized as the most versatile of all essential oils. If you can
only buy one essential oil, lavender is the one to buy.
Lavender has also been clinically evaluated for its relaxing effects.
The fragrance is calming, relaxing, and balancing—physically and emotionally.
Lavender may be used to cleanse cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. It is also
indicated for the following conditions, though it can potentially help any
condition: burns, scarring, dandruff, hair loss, allergies, convulsions, herpes,
headaches, indigestions, insomnia, high blood pressure, menopausal conditions,
nausea, phlebitis, tumors, premenstrual conditions, skin conditions (acne,
dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and rashes) and stretch marks. (This information

Reiki is a healing technique that uses the practitioner's hands and sacred
symbols to transfer universal life energy to the body. It was developed in Japan
in the early 20th century and is probably a rediscovery of ancient Tibetan
healing methods. The Reiki treatments help promote health by clearing energy
blockages in the body that can cause physical or emotional disease.
Because of the simplicity and gentleness of Reiki, it can be used on any living
creature—human, animal or plant. Through the use of the sacred symbols and a
meditative state, it can also be sent over distance, if it is not possible to do
it hands-on. This makes it possible to treat animals who cannot be touched or
who are moving around the room rather than lying on a massage table as a human
would do.
Our companion animals can particularly benefit from Reiki since they are prone
to the same physical and emotional problems that we are. Like us, they live in a
polluted, stressful environment, receive western medical treatments that have
side effects and they often eat processed, cooked foods. They can become injured
like us, particularly dogs who may be actively running and jumping, perhaps
doing
athletic activities like agility. Also, our pets can become so bonded to us that
they may unconsciously pick up physical or emotional problems that we are
experiencing, in an attempt to heal us. If they can't discharge this energy,
they can become sick.
A very effective way to treat these shared imbalances is for both the humans and
their animals to receive Reiki treatments. We both have training in doing Reiki
for humans and Margaret received specialized training in doing Reiki on animals.

animals, contact us for an appointment at (303) 271-1629 or

This is an anthology of writings about the relationship between humans and
animals that is very thought provoking. Some of these essays are by scientists
who have learned through experience to view animals differently than the
dispassionate way expected of scientists. The prevailing way of looking at
animals in western society has been that they are not our equals, don't have
feelings and thoughts as we do and therefore we can treat them as we please.
Even very spiritually oriented people often do not think of animals as our true
equals, such as when they make statements that animals do not have individual
souls. In my opinion, it is arrogant to think that we can know the definitive
answer to questions such as that. This book challenges our typical ways of
looking at animals and while I didn't agree with the viewpoints in every essay,
I found them all very stimulating.
One of the most fascinating stories to me was the description of scientific
research of prairie dog colonies that discovered they have a very complex
language. The prairie dogs described other animals and humans in their
environment in great detail, including what clothes the humans were wearing. It
makes sense that they would develop this capacity, since they live together and
this could help them evade predators. What I find interesting is that we humans
are so astonished by this capability of prairie dogs. That really says something
about how we typically view animals.
