If you have come to this page because your dog has Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) or Auto-Immune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA) and you are searching for a cure, our hearts go out to you. IMHA and AIHA are such dreadful diseases (more devastating than cancer), no pet guardian should have to experience these conditions alone. A dog's condition can change in as little as 4 hours (even after a blood transfusion). The first case of AIHA/IMHA we helped was in 2003. Since then we have handled 450+ IMHA cases and more than 50% of these dogs are still alive today (some had blood counts as low as 6). In sharing our experiences below, we hope to ease your journey and that of your dog. Western veterinary medicine does not hold much hope for an animal whose blood count (HCT or PCV) is below 10%. We have many cases where the dog's lowest PCV count is below 10% (6-8% range) and they are still alive today. Conventional veterinary medicines prescribed are Prednisone, Neoral (cyclosporine), Azathioprine, Oxyglobin and Antepsin. While these are necessary to treat the symptoms, these drugs do nothing to stimulate red blood cell production at the bone marrow level. Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) or Auto-Immune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA) appear to be the same disease with different names. Prednisone (also Prednisolone) is the most commonly prescribed drug and while it does suppress the body's immune system from attacking itself, it does nothing to regenerate the red blood cells that are being destroyed, resulting in anemia. When red blood cells are not manufactured at the bone marrow level, frequent blood transfusions are needed and this disease is often fatal. IMHA or AIHA have a very high fatality rate (nearly 50-80%). Some vets are seeing the onset of this auto-immune disease shortly after vaccinations.  In Dr. Jean Hofve's article on Vaccination she states: "Several known risks are associated with one or more specific vaccines. Antibodies are the goal of vaccination. We want the body to produce antibodies against the disease being vaccinated against. However, the vaccine manufacturing process contains some quirks that cause the body to make antibodies to a wide variety of components in the vaccine. Diseases associated with the tissues to which autoantibodies are made include thyroiditis (which can lead to hypothyroidism in dogs), lupus, cardiomyopathy, and autoimmune hemolytic anemia." Others IMHA/AIHA cases have begun during pregnancy, just after delivery, after the first "heat" and just after flea & tick (such as FRONTLINE® Flea and Tick Control or ComfortisTM [spinosad])  or heartworm treatment. The EPA held a Webcast and issued a summary report (03/17/2010) pursuing a series of actions to increase the safety of spot-on pesticide products for flea and tick control for cats and dogs due to adverse effects. Based on our holistic (non-medical) perspective, we suspect any hormonal changes or anything that compromises/shocks/ traumatizes the immune system could trigger these auto-immune diseases. Bio-Algae Concentrates (BAC)

During the 1970’s in the former U.S.S.R., the chicken, cows, pigs and mink populations (all cash crops) were beset with a cancer epidemic. In 1973, Dr. Michael Kiriac was tasked by the Moldova Academy of Sciences to research a nutritional way to prevent cancer in animals. Current research at that time pointed to the promise of algae, as a nutritional tool in preventing cancer. Out of the 25,000+ species of algae on Earth, he chose more than 1,000 different species to research. Bio-algae concentrates (BAC) is the generic name given to the research algae mixture that Dr. Michael Kiriac used on mice, rats, chicken, rabbits, mink, pigs and other livestock (over 20 animal species total). After 20 years of research he discovered the following BAC benefits:

1. 50% of diseased chickens (including Marek disease, a type of cancer) were put back into production
2. Ability to raise disease-free (including cancer) chickens without the use of antibiotics and hormones

You can order a copy of Dr. Kiriac’s book, Awakening the Genius Within, documenting his research on over 20 animal species, at Awakening the Genius Within book. It is this ability of BAC to regenerate bone marrow and blood cells, that is most relevant to IMHA. What research did Dr. Kiriac find to suggest algae could help the body regenerate blood cells? Chinese scientists documented that phycocyanin stimulates hematopoesis (creation of blood), emulating the hormone erythropoetin (EPO). EPO is produced by healthy kidneys and regulates bone marrow stem cell production of red blood cells. They claim phycocyanin regulated white blood cell production, even when bone marrow stem cells are damaged by toxic chemicals or radiation.¹ Since the above is purely research, we leave it up to the reader to draw their own conclusions. Since 2003, we have been using bio-algae concentrates (microalgae of Spirulina pacifica, Spirulina platensis, Dunaliella salina and astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis) with many dogs that have recovered from AIHA, IMHA and other auto-immune diseases. Out of the 125+ IMHA cases we have dealt with, at least 50% (conservatively) are still alive. We suspect a number of the remaining cases are still alive but unfortunately, most people treat whole food products just like supplements, in that they only give them as long as their pet has symptoms. When the pet totally recovers, they discontinue the product and never get back with us. To respect the privacy of the guardians and sensitivity of the subject, we have not followed up.

Bio-algae concentrates are a nutritional food product and we advertise nothing more. However, as you can see by customers' testimonials, once their animal's natural ability to heal has been awakened by this superfood, the healing power of the animal's body is unlimited. We say unlimited because we have seen a mast cell cancer tumor (fastest spreading type of cancer tumor) disappear in ten weeks when chemotherapy and radiation treatments were declined. We have seen numerous IMHA and AIHA dogs make a full recovery, after the vets had given up on the dogs (blood cell count down to 6). In one case on the Yahoo Group Board, Jeanna literally saw improvement within 24-48 hours after giving bio-algae concentrates. We will leave it up to the reader to draw their own conclusions regarding this super nutritional product and Auto-Immune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA).

How did bio-algae concentrates do this? Bio-algae concentrates simply supplied the super nutrients to the body at the cellular level (microalgae are one cell organisms) rather than trying to 'fix' the problem with drugs or a supplement that needs to be digested and broken down in the digestive tract. Since we are not medically trained, our guess (based on 20+ years of bio-algae concentrates animal research) is that bio-algae concentrates has the ability to stimulate the body's own natural ability to heal. When the body is holistically balanced and all the glands and organs are functioning at close to 100%, then the body can resume red blood cell production at the bone marrow level all by itself. When the master gland (pituitary), pineal and hypothalamus in the brain are synergistically working together, the bone marrow is naturally producing healthy red blood cells. We see very quick results after starting bio-algae concentrates. Bio-algae concentrates contains super nutrients (specifically abundant antioxidants in the form of mixed carotenoids from its four microalgae) that can awaken the master gland in the brain, which controls all the other glands and organs of the body and, of course, red blood cell production. Since no one knows exactly why IMHA and AIHA occur, boosting and balancing the whole body is the most holistic approach to the regeneration of red blood cells, which after all, is controlled by the brain. Based on our years of nutritional experience with the products, we can share a few lessons that we have learned to help you avoid any unpleasant circumstances.

We have seen animal guardians give too much bio-algae concentrates, too fast in the beginning (in hopes of "healing" their pet quickly) with the initial results being vomiting and/or diarrhea. While this is not a side effect of the product, the results are unpleasant (for both the animal and guardian). In our holistic opinion, these signs show the product is working by waking up the animal's natural ability to heal and purging toxins from the body but the amount is more aggressive than the body can handle. We suggest a beginning introduction of 1/2 capsule per day (1/4 morning + 1/4 evening) for small animals and 1.0 capsule per day (1/2 morning + 1/2 evening) for large animals. In emergency cases where the animal is not eating and death looks to be imminent, this could be accelerated to 1/2 capsule every 4 hours, at the guardian's discretion.

It is best to mix the algae powder in wet food but in extreme cases where the animal is not eating, the guardians have mixed the algae powder in water and squirted the mixture with an eye dropper or syringe directly into the animal's mouth to stimulate the appetite (algae are food). Normally (non-fatal conditions), we suggest holding this beginning amount for 3-5 days and then increasing by 1/4 or 1/2 capsule per day, as long as the animal's body is adjusting (no detoxing symptoms). But in extreme cases, this can be accelerated by increasing the daily amount by 1/4 or 1/2 capsule per day every 1-2 days as needed. Our rule of thumb is, give as much as the animal can tolerate without exacerbating the current symptoms or causing detoxing symptoms to appear.

Here is a testimony for a dog whose blood cell count was down to 8.0% and and nearly dead (normal range is 37-55%). The dog is alive and well today, running in the Colorado mountains at 11,000 ft, three years and ten months later (January, 2008) after having been given a poor prognosis for survival by the vet.

Cali's Testimonial

Cali was due to have her puppies on February 10th of 2003 and about 1 week before she was due she fell over and got very weak. She was like this for about 3 days. I fed her chicken broth with an eye dropper. We took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with anemia. Her blood count was only 13 (40-45 is normal) and she lost her puppies. They gave her a blood transfusion and kept her overnight. She came home and we took her back a week later for her hysterectomy as the vet said she had a really bad infection. She had her operation and came home again. About 10 days later she fell over again and we took her back to the vet. At that time her blood count was at 8 and we were told to take her to Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital for another transfusion because they can only do one transfusion without blood typing. We rushed her over the mountain (from Snowmass), got her blood typed, started the transfusion and were told we could have killed her by taking her over the pass (the high elevation depletes more oxygen). While she was there they did a bone marrow biopsy and told us she had no red blood cells being made. After 4 days, and $7500 later, the vet told us she had Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA)—Red Blood Cell Aplasia, her blood count was up to 14 but she could not go home and would probably die there. At that point they had her on 7 different immune suppressants including Prednisone (a steroid). I took Cali and all her drugs home anyway. We took her to the vet everyday for blood tests for about 2 months and she just wasn't getting any better. She was bloating up and had no strength or energy. She couldn't even go down the stairs by herself. I started to research the drugs and slowly pulled her off all but Prednisone. She started to act a little better but we still couldn't get her blood count above 17. Her liver was enlarged and she was full of fluid.

 Fortunately, I met Alecia who introduced me to bio-algae concentrates along with a natural diet of chicken or beef, rice and carrots mixed with seaweed, garlic, acidophilus, and flax seed oil. We were still giving her Prednisone for about 5 months and gradually weaned her off of it. She has been off of Prednisone for about 9 months now and only eats her chicken or beef, rice and a little garlic and is down to one capsule of bio-algae concentrates in the morning and one at night (down from eight capsules per day at her peak). She has not been to the vet for about 9 months because I felt so sorry for her getting poked all the time that I just lift her lips up now and see if they are pink instead. Which Formula to Order

Some dogs have fully recovered using the general nutrition maintenance formula and some needed the advanced formula of bio-algae concentrates. The right formula is essentially the one that works. The problem with IMHA is that it is such an unpredictable disease and can be suddenly fatal. The reason why we suggest starting with the advanced formula (with the most antioxidants) first is that what happens if one only orders the maintenance formula and after two weeks it is not working and the dog suddenly dies. Everyone will be second guessing if the advanced formula would have produced different results. Whether bio-algae concentrates work to bring the body back into balance depends on the dog's breed, age, weight, type of diet (dry kibble, canned food, raw food), lifestyle, genetics and what the possible IMHA trigger was (suspected vaccination, flea & tick treatment, heartworm medication, virus, parasite, exposure to pesticides, etc.?). Suggested Amounts

At the onset of AIHA, we always suggest one start with the bio-algae concentrates formula with the most antioxidants and super nutrition that can nourish the brain. The antioxidants and super nutrition can actually cross the blood/brain barrier to awaken the master gland (pituitary) and brain's organs (pineal and hypothalamus). Normally, we would suggest a gradual introduction to bio-algae concentrates. However, if your pet is not eating, see the emergency suggestions at the bottom of our Saved Lives testimonial web page. After the blood count improves and stabilizes into the normal range, one can consider either reducing the high beginning amount or transitioning to the maintenance formula with more nutrition and less antioxidants if desired. This all depends on the age, genetics and recovery of the dog.

While some of our testimonials have used the maintenance formula (because that is all they had) successfully, we still suggest starting with the advanced formula first. No one really knows the exact triggers for this deadly disease and a dog's condition can change in as little as four hours. Do you want to trust just using the maintenance formula with such a deadly disease?

In AIHA cases, a balance must be achieved between giving too much, too fast and possibly giving enough to save a pet's life. Below are some general guidelines. Since each animal is different, it is left up to the animal's guardian, who is most familiar with the circumstances, which course of action to follow. Our basic rule of thumb is, one can give as much as the body can tolerate without exacerbating the current symptoms or causing detoxing symptoms to appear.

Too much, too fast!

If your dog has undergone recent surgery, is under any type of prescription drug program, undergoing chemotherapy/radiation treatment or has actively growing tumors, we suggest a very gradual introduction to bio-algae concentrates. We have seen both people and pets get too much bio-algae concentrates, too fast in the beginning (in hopes of "healing" quickly) with the initial results being vomiting and/or diarrhea. While this is not a side effect of the product, the results are unpleasant. In our holistic opinion, these signs show the product is working by waking up the body's natural ability to heal and purging toxins from the body but the amount is more aggressive than the body can handle. For any of the previously mentioned conditions, we suggest the following beginning amounts:

• Small size animals = ½ capsule per day (¼ morning +¼ evening) for the first 3-5 days
• Medium and large size animals =  1.0 capsule per day (½ morning + ½ evening) for the first
  3-5 days

Hold this beginning amount for the above time interval and increase incrementally at the same time interval if the body adjusts without any problems.

Emergency Cases

In emergency cases where the animal is not eating and death looks to be imminent, this could be accelerated to ½ capsule every 2-4 hours (depending on weight) based on a 12-hour day. It is best to mix the bio-algae concentrates into wet food but in extreme cases where the animal is not eating, pet guardians have mixed the microalgae in enough water to either make a paste applied in the mouth with your finger or squirted the mixture directly into the animal’s mouth with an eye dropper or syringe to stimulate the appetite (algae is a food). For squirting, one can mix approximately one capsule of microalgae powder in ¼ cup of water and administer with an eye dropper or syringe. Be careful not to squirt the water too far back into the throat or too forcefully, as to cause gagging or getting liquid into the lungs. Our rule of thumb is, give as much as the body can tolerate without exacerbating the current symptoms or causing detoxing symptoms to appear.

If one wants to take action before bio-algae concentrates arrives, here is a suggestion based on our nutritional holistic experience. Go to the health food store and buy the best algae/Spirulina product you can, that has two or more species of algae in it. Alternatively, buy 2-4 single bottles with a single alga in them. Look for algae species such as Spirulina Pacifica, Spirulina Platensis, Dunaliella, Astaxanthin, blue-green algae, Hawaiian algae, chlorella and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA). Also, buy some liquid chlorophyll in either a dropper bottle or gel capsules. Mix equal parts of all the algae species you purchased into approximately ½ teaspoon total of algae and one dropper full (about 25 drops) of the liquid chlorophyll (or poke a hole in the gel capsule to squeeze the chlorophyll out). As above, use enough water to either make a paste applied directly into the mouth using your finger or enough water to squirt with an eye dropper or syringe. Our rule of thumb in emergencies is, give as much as the animal can tolerate without exacerbating the current symptoms or causing detoxing symptoms to appear. One can do this every four hours or so, depending on the severity of the symptoms and tolerance of the dog's body.

Our 7 1/2 year old Beagle was diagnosed with IMHA yesterday, she has not eaten in 3 days, I feel like I am watching her die right now. The vet has her on Prednisone and Amoxicillin as of yesterday, but I don't think she is even receiving the medication as she throws up shortly after I give it to her. Vets said it was a 50/50 chance. I am feeding her with a syringe and carrying her outside to potty.

One week ago today I started Rainbow on bio-algae concentrates and her blood count was 12. Rainbow's blood count this morning is 31!

This morning's blood count is 39!!!!! within the normal range now. Has only been on the bio-algae concentrates for about 10 days. We are so happy!

More IMHA Success Stories

Pooch had a rough night on 11/11 and needed CPR on the morning of 11/12 because he collapsed and his heart stopped. They were able to revive him and gave him his tenth blood transfusion on the morning of 11/12 for IMHA. His lowest PCV was about 8. We gave him the bio-algae concentrates at approximately 12:30 on 11/12 and he responded wonderfully. He began drinking water almost immediately. His PCV level remained stable at 32, when in the past it had been no higher than 16, even with blood transfusions. On 11/14, they discharged him from the hospital after 10 days there. I am happy to report that he has remained home and his PCV is now 45, in the normal range. We started off with a pinch of bio-algae concentrates and then increased it incrementally. We are now giving him 1 capsule a day. He is 11.6 lbs. now. He is still on the immune suppressants and steroids (Prednisone, Asprin, Neoral and Azathioprine) but we are working on weaning him off these medications.

Elsa, a 10 year old Rottweiler who weighs about 80 #, was taken to see her vet for a rash and routine care. Her doctor suggested a blood test because of her age, to see how she was doing overall. Her tests came back good, except for slight anemia. Further testing showed that her red blood cells were not
regenerating and the count was down a little further. The possibilities are leukemia, other cancers IMHA/AIHA, all things with a very poor prognosis. She was been found to have a non-regenerative anemia, the cause of which is unknown. She will be seeing a specialist for a consult next week.

I found the Optimum Choices website and although I did not believe bio-algae concentrates would make a difference, it has. I started 3 weeks ago with bio-algae concentrates, gradually increasing her amount from ½ capsule 2x/day to 1 capsule 3x/day. The results have been very good. Elsa's tongue and gums have become much pinker and she is moving around with much greater ease. She has more energy and wants to go outside for walks and to explore. She is playful again and is sleeping better. Overall, her energy is way up, her coat looks better, her condition appears to be improving. I will be continuing with your product.

Her alternatives would probably be a chemo agent, Prednisone to suppress her immune system (a Band Aid at best and it doesn't really make sense to suppress immune system, but that's what is out there). And her arthritis is improving without the use of Rimadyl, which I also hesitate to use.

Hi, this is Philo's mommy and just wanted to let you know that he is doing unbelievably great. My poor baby went through a lot and honestly I don't think his little body could have taken it if it wasn't for the great nutrients bio-algae concentrates provides.

Up until Sunday, August 16th, his blood count had dropped to 10 and the doctor was administering Oxyglobin (two transfusions were done prior). He needed a third transfusion but nothing was certain. Six days before (Aug. 10th) when my doggie got diagnosed with IMHA I had no idea what to do or what that disease was like. Went on the Internet for several hours and thank goodness I was able to find your website and educate myself. After reading everything I said to myself what do I have to lose and ordered a bottle. By Wednesday, Aug 13th, Phillo had already gotten his second blood transfusion but was still peeing a lot of blood. After I administered bio-algae concentrates (1.5 capsules split in 2 servings) his pee immediately (1 hour later) went to orange, then green and now a healthy light yellow. We were all stunned. Unfortunately the destruction of blood cells was so much that we needed to buy time until all meds start kicking in so we went ahead with the third transfusion. His PCV went to 26, 27, 24, 18. But the encouragement we got was that he was acting a lot more alert, eating on his own, peeing normally, playing with his toys, barking, kissing us non-stop and that spark in his eyes was back.
The doctors were very surprised by how fast he was recouping. His condition was critical and in a few occasions he was on the verge of dying. The doctor also told me she was very surprised by how, with such poor eating and after 3 transfusions, his vital organs were not damaged in any way.

By Thursday, Aug. 20th, his PCV was 25 and the doctors agreed that if it kept going up or stayed the same he could come back home the next day. On Friday, Aug. 21st, his PCV was at 28 and we were sooooooo happy because we could finally bring our little man back home. Took him to the vet yesterday, Aug. 22nd, and his PCV was at 31!!!

He still is on medication, but bio-algae concentrates truly gave the nutrients Philo needed to pull through and heal. Everyone at the hospital was amazed on how quickly he responded when he only had a 50/50 chance. The dosage of antibiotics will eventually decrease/taken away but bio-algae concentrates will ALWAYS be in Philito's life.

If you are reading this while you are trying to find something that will make your puppy get/feel better, do not hesitate. This whole food product is really ahead of its time and it works WONDERS.

My dog Sarah (Brussels Griffon, 4 years old about 12 pounds) was diagnosed with IMHA two weeks ago. Still eats well. Has had two blood transfusions and is on two medications: Predisolone and Azithropine. Blood Level at onset was 11. Two weeks later it went as high as 27 and last check it was 23. Sarah has been on bio-algae concentrates for a month now. She has also been on vet prescribed auto immune suppressant. I have been giving her one capsule a day and her blood level increased to 47. She now has increase in her Liver function test. Vet has taken her off of one of the suppressants and I will be increasing her bio-algae concentrates to 2 a day. I just want to say THANK YOU as if I did not find your site on line I do not believe that my pup would be here today. Everyday we learn something new about IMHA and how bad it is. I know that we are still up for a long battle. Just wanted to say thank you again!!!!!

My 7 year old Bichon Frise had IMHA. She started bio-algae concentrates four days after diagnosis with a blood count of 20%. Three weeks after starting, her blood levels had risen to 30%. At six weeks, her blood level was 37% and her blood test showed no signs of IMHA. She’s at 39% this week and the heart murmur she had developed from the IMHA is completely gone. The vet had told me previously that chances of the heart murmur going away were “very slim”. Her prednisone dose is now one-eighth of the starting dose, 2.5 mg. Normal shipping is done by U.S.P.S. Priority Mail (2-3 days but not guaranteed). If you have a critically ill pet, please be sure you consider the other three shipping options in our Shopping Cart: Expedited Priority Mail, U.P.S. Two-day Service and Federal Express. Priority Mail is cheaper but we have found the U.S.P.S. to be extremely unreliable when compared to U.P.S. and Federal Express.

If you want to do something proactive before the bio-algae concentrates arrives, go to a people health food store and buy some algae/Spirulina and liquid chlorophyll. Buy the highest grade algae product you can with two or more species of algae/Spirulina in it. No product will have four species, like bio-algae concentrates, so just get the best you can. Also, buy some liquid chlorophyll in a dropper bottle or gel capsules. Mix about ¼ teaspoon algae powder with one dropper full (about 25 drops) of chlorophyll in a half a cup of water. Mix this into your dog's food or if your dog is not eating, then squirt it into the mouth. See Saved Lives for further details.
