Pet Food RecallsIn July, 2018, the FDA began an investigation into reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in pets eating certain foods, many "grain-free" labeled, that contained a high proportion of peas, lentils, other legume seeds (pulses), and/or potatoes in various forms (whole, flour, protein, etc.) as main ingredients. We have heard that some large pet food manufacturers and some traditional Western veterinarians are recommending pet parents avoid "BEG" diets — Boutique companies, Exotic ingredients or Grain-free diets. Before you panic, read our truly holistic perspective in previous newsletters:
The pet food recalls continue. The best "wholistic" suggestion to prevent danger to your pet is -- STOP feeding dry kibble dog food. In our "wholistic" opinion, dry kibble dog food is the least nutritious form of food to feed a carnivore. Furthermore, a majority of all pet food recalls is with dry food. Canned food, freeze-dried food and raw food have a much lower percentage of recalls. For the latest recalls, go to: Dog Food Recalls or FDA website To read more on our "wholistic" philosophy on pet food, go to the following links:

Holistic COVID-19 Lessons: Taking ResponsibilityAfter three auto accidents and a recent concussion, Russell had a team of two osteopathic physicians (D.O.), chiropractor (D.C.), acupuncturist (L.Ac.), massage body worker (PUSH L.M.T.) and a counseling therapist (L.P.C.) support him in keeping his body aligned, symptom-free and functioning in spite of all the daily stress and mini-slips he put his body through. In addition, he was prescribed many self-care therapies, which he fit into his busy schedule when he could. When COVID-19 hit and the Stay-at-Home orders came down, he had to think of how to survive without all these monthly healthcare treatment appointments his body was used to. What if his foot slipped
on the ice (yes, it is still snowing in April in Colorado) and he misaligned several vertebrae, strained a few muscles and started getting headaches again? What if he was in a hurry and carelessly banged his head on the SUV's tailgate or open cupboard and misaligned an upper cervical (Atlas), causing not only muscle spasms, headaches but also depression and lack of motivation to work? With the Stay-at-Home orders he cannot just run to the doctor or therapist to get "fixed" now. Do not wait for a crisis (COVID-19) to learn this lesson, as Russell did. Here is how he resolved his dilemma. Sometimes we humans tend to get lazy and give our power away to healthcare practitioners. It is easier to ask them to just fix our medical problems and let them tell us what to do: no research, no analysis, no responsibility needed. But in the end, is that "wholistic" and best for our long-term holistic care? Since Russell could not just run to his doctor or body worker to fix his body, he had to assume responsibility in keeping his body healthy and structurally aligned, BEFORE symptoms show up or blow up. This meant slowing down his daily movements, so no mishaps occurred and finally making time to do all those self-care treatment exercises his practitioners gave him (but rarely completed). The first part took a little practice but had its benefits. In trying to balance running an Internet business (16 hours/day), running the daily household as househusband (Margaret works away from home) and fitting in all his TBI therapy and daily treatment, Russell frequently turned around in the kitchen too quickly and accidentally kicked a cat or stepped on their tail. Slowing down his movements and being mindful of what he was doing, decreased these mini accidents. The last step was actually easier because he just took out his instruction sheets and did the self-care exercises, he was prescribed daily now: mornings before work and evenings before bed. This actually took less time than driving to a doctor's office plus the appointment time, thus saving him time and money. Changing his daily habits was the hardest part. So, after one month of practicing these new post-COVID-19 habits, Russell has not had any mishaps or mini-accidents needing a doctors' care or therapists' healing hands. So, the question to you is, what self-care practices (such as walking, hiking, jogging, dog walking, bicycling, stretching, yoga, meditation, etc.) your doctors and therapists have already given you, could you be doing daily now that you have to stay-at-home. How much time and money could you save by taking more responsibility for your body and "wholistic" health and giving less power to your healthcare providers (including vets for your pets)? Even if you are not staying at home (still working an essential job), doing more self-care treatment, exercising and taking back the healthcare responsibility of your own (and your pet's) body has many long-term benefits. We all know by now how detrimental sitting at a desk all day is. Studies show working out 2-3 times per week cannot undo the accumulated damage of sitting 8-hours at a desk for 5 days per week. How about dedicating 10-15 minutes, twice per day, to do stretching and chair-sitting neutralizing exercises so our bodies are not so wound up at night when we go home to relax. Our fast-paced, fast-food, instant gratification lifestyle is not immune-enhancing or life-sustaining. Let the COVID-19 pandemic cause us to make healthier choices and take responsibility for our, our children's and pet's future. |
