This book (actually a trilogy of books) was
published in the 1950's and has enthralled generations of readers, as well as
being studied and acclaimed by scholars. It is far more than just another
"fantasy novel". Some people have called it the greatest novel of the 20th
century. With the recent release of the Lord of the Rings
movies by Peter Jackson, the book's popularity is soaring again. While the
movies are a masterpiece of cinematography, they are no substitute for reading
the books (for one thing, they deviate quite
a bit from the plot of the books, especially in the second movie). What gives Lord of the Rings the quality of classic literature is that it is a retelling of the ancient mythological story of the hero's journey.
