Are Genetically Modified
Organisms
(GMO) Bad?
Remember why L-tryptophan (amino acid) was
only available by prescription? Supposedly, it was because of a
contaminated batch manufactured (1989) by a Japanese company from which
100 people died and 5,000-10,000 became sick (some permanently disabled).
Some of the symptoms include: incredible pain, hair falling out,
memory loss, muscle weakness, muscles uncontrollably locked, skin became
leathery and painful. But the real reason was not "contamination" in
the conventional sense but because one company was using a
genetic engineered (GE) manufacturing technique which changed the
effects of their
L-tryptophan. This was the first widespread human exposure to a
genetically modified (GM) product or genetically modified
organism (GMO). The only reason why this recall occurred, was
because the symptoms were acute, debilitating and had a quick onset.
What if a GMO or GE food entered the food supply today and the symptoms
were not debilitating or did not have a quick onset but took years to
develop? Would you want you, your family and your pet to be eating GMO
food today without thorough testing? If you eat fast food, eat in
restaurants or buy processed or packaged foods with the following
ingredients, you need to read the rest of this article to educate
yourself about what is going into your mouth and the mouth of your loved
ones (including your pet).

Genetically modified organisms (GMO) are
produced by transferring a gene from one species (for example, bacteria,
viruses, animals or plants) into another, to produce a desired result.
For instance, a gene from an
herbicide resistant bacteria could be
inserted into a food crop so that the crop can be sprayed with herbicides (thus killing all the weeds) and still survive. In Nature,
the genes from one species are not meant to cross or affect a different
species. So, this practice is inherently dangerous because now
scientists have circumvented Nature's genetic species barrier.
Jeffrey M. Smith, in his research book
Seeds of Deception, documented 65 potential health risks of
eating GMO foods. In animal experiments when given a choice cows, pigs,
elk, deer,
raccoons, geese, squirrels, rats and mice, have shown a
preference for non-GMO or complete avoidance of GMO food. What do
animals know that we do not? In the first and only raw feeding study, an
experimental Flavor-Saver tomato was fed to rats. The rats would not eat
the GM Flavor-Saver tomato. When the rats were force fed the GM
tomatoes, 7/20 developed stomach lesions, 7/40 died within two weeks and
were replaced in the study.
The most knowledgeable genetic scientist on
this planet, Arpad Pusztai, conducted a
safety study (1998) with GMO
potatoes. In an effort to determine what safety protocols were
necessary, he studied three groups of potatoes:
- Natural potatoes, which was the
control
- Potatoes spiked with insecticide
- Potatoes which were genetically modified
(GMO) to include insecticide
Only animals fed this third group (GMO) got
sick after 10 days. Not even the potatoes spiked with insecticide made
test animals sick. This proved to him the GE process created damaging
change not the insecticide. What he saw was potentially
pre-cancerous cell growth in the digestive tract, smaller growth of
brains, liver and testicles, partial atrophy of the liver and damage to
the immune system. Based on these results and the stomach lesions and death in rats from
the Flavor-Saver tomato experiments, what implications could this have
for people and pets who are developing allergies,
cancer, inflammatory
bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease, celiac
disease, colitis, megacolon, leaky gut syndrome or other digestive
disorders today? Did you know GMO crops of corn, soy, canola, cotton,
Hawaiian papaya, some zucchini, crooked-neck squash, sugar beets and tobacco
are being consumed today without having been tested with these vigorous
scientific methods.
Here are some more shocking facts about the
GE process. The GE process literally blasts genes from one species'
cells into another, using a gene gun, thus creating potential mutations.
To activate the desired gene, a promoter is included which turns on the
gene all the time, 24 hours a day, unlike the way genes normally operate
(only turned on as needed). And to identify which cells have
successfully received the transferred gene, an
antibiotic-resistant marker gene is used as well. After the gene
transfer, the plate of cells is doused with an antibiotic and those that
survive have the desired gene and the antibiotic resistant gene. The
animals that eat the GMO food thus get the antibiotic resistant gene
which likely can transfer into the bacteria in their gut. Could this be the reason we are seeing an increase in
antibiotic resistant diseases today? This GMO process allows genes to
cross the species barrier. Are we not seeing an indication of diseases
crossing the species barrier? The FDA's own scientists concluded there
was too much risk and not enough testing to allow GMO food to enter the
human food chain. So, why are there GM food on your table without
adequate testing?
It is because of an FDA policy stating they
"... are not aware of any information showing that the foods
created
from these new methods differ from other foods in any meaningful or
uniform way." Because of this policy statement, NO TESTING WAS NECESSARY
for any GMO food crops to be allowed into our food supply since 1992.
Who was in charge of formulating this policy statement? Michael Taylor,
Monsanto’s (biotechnology company) former attorney and later its vice president, was brought
into the FDA to oversee this new policy development. With Taylor in
charge, the scientists’ warnings were ignored and denied. Kind of like
the fox watching the henhouse.
Why is all the above significant to you,
your family and your pet today? Because without you knowing it and
without your approval, you, your family and your pet are probably
eating GE food right now. You are part of a grand GMO experiment without
your knowledge. If you are part of the 9/10 people who would choose not
to eat GMO food if given the choice, here are some guidelines.

While no firm scientific conclusion can be
drawn from currently available research, we feel this issue is important
enough to our health to personally avoid all GMO ingredients and GE
food. Remember, 50 years ago the tobacco industry was saying, "There is absolutely no
scientific evidence that second-hand smoke is harmful and there is no conclusive
proof that even first-hand smoke is dangerous to one's health." Today,
the same companies that are using GE to manufacture GMO foods are the
same companies that told us DDT, Agent Orange, PCB and aspartame are
