We have all heard the
advice, 'get a second opinion.' We personally encountered two incidences
which emphasize this benefit. Iris, our 9 year old Tabby cat, stopped
eating in December, 2010. Initially, we thought a respiratory infection
had returned. Our holistic vet
at
Belleview Animal Clinic did a blood test and prescribed an
antibiotic based on a raised white blood cell count. When she did not
improve after four days they did an ultrasound. Based on the following
results, Iris was diagnosed with
advanced
intestinal lymphoma or adenocarcinoma:
PHYSICAL EXAM:
normal, except for fever
BLOOD TEST: high
white blood cells, high neutrophils, toxic neutrophils, immature
neutrophils
ULTRASOUND FINDINGS:
fluid in abdomen, thickened intestinal walls, mass in intestines
that could be tumor, enlarged lymph nodes.
Ever since we adopted
Iris three years ago we have fed her a raw food diet with added bio-algae concentratesto
augment her nutrition. One would think that would be enough to prevent
cancer. But previously
Iris had three feline leukemia vaccines (annually) while owned by a vet
tech. The leukemia virus is known to cause
lymphoma and we suspect the vaccine could cause it as well. The vet tech also made liberal use of all other feline
vaccines because she had access to them. After being relinquished by the
vet tech, Iris had two other foster homes before we adopted her. Iris
had a very poor quality coat (dry, stiff and horrible to touch) when we
first got her, probably due to the cheap quality dry kibble food she was fed.
The traditional
veterinary treatment for lymphoma is prednisone and chemotherapy. Our
research showed both have horrible side effects and neither extended the
lives of pets significantly. Since even our holistic vets could offer no
more options and were suggesting euthanasia or hospice care, we decided
to research and focus only on holistic care. The first thing we did is
schedule a session with an animal communicator (Joy Turner) to find out
what Iris wanted. We do not believe in doing invasive and extraordinary
measures if the pet does not want it. It is the pet’s owner that seems
to have the biggest fear of death, not the pet itself. Through Joy, Iris
told us she was not ready to leave and would accept our help in working
through the lymphoma. So, we solicited all our holistic practitioners’
advice listed below:
We greatly respect the
holistic expertise of all the vets at Belleview Animal Clinic and still
take our pets there. The lesson we learned is that every practitioner
has different education, a different set of skills and varied
experiences in their practice. It is now 12 months since Iris' initial
diagnosis of advanced intestinal lymphoma or adenocarcinoma. She
had a relapse in July 2011, and we were again told to take her home to
die, that nothing could be done for her. We were prepared to let her go
if she wanted to die but Iris told the animal communicator she was not
ready to go and did not agree with the vet's prognosis. So, we got a
second opinion again, this time consulting our homeopathic vet. Dr. Jan Facinelli
recently completed a course on cancer homeopathy therapies. While we are
not "out of the woods" yet, Iris has made an amazing second comeback.
After a week of trying
different homeopathic remedies, Iris started eating again and fully
recovered. We do not know if her cancer is gone but she is free of
symptoms and alive nearly a year after her initial diagnosis. She even
recovered well from a cat bite abscess in September—we did have to give
her antibiotics for it but she recovered as quickly as we would expect a
healthy cat to recover. Our original holistic vet calls Iris our
"miracle cat." It pays to consult another
practitioner of the same discipline, as well as other holistic practitioners in other disciplines to investigate ALL your options.

Iris play with her laser mouse by clicking on the

Margaret also has benefited from getting a second opinion. When she
recently got her teeth cleaned, the
dentist was concerned about
a darkened tooth and took an x-ray because he suspected it might be
diseased and need to be extracted. The dentist then left for the day and
the hygienist read the x-ray. She told Margaret the tooth showed "necrosis"
(dead bone) and would probably need extracting. Margaret was quite
dismayed because she was not yet fully recovered from a major extraction
last June. This holistic dentist does extractions "properly", meaning he not only
removes the tooth but drills out the periodontal ligaments and any
diseased bone in the socket. This promotes full healing of the
extraction site but takes much longer to recover from, as the body has
to grow new bone to fill in the hole. (Extractions done without this
technique may appear to heal quicker but the body often leaves a hole
there due to the dead bone and periodontal ligaments left behind, which
can necessitate surgery years later.) Because the bone is drilled on,
the extraction requires taking Cipro, a very strong antibiotic, for 12
days to prevent bone infection. Margaret was still struggling to rebuild
her gut health after the previous extraction, and was still experiencing
tooth and jaw pain as her body worked at regrowing the new bone and
nerves in the extraction site. So the thought of facing another
extraction surgery was
very upsetting and she was fretting over it all
night.
The next day, the dentist called and said he saw no
problem with the tooth. When Margaret asked how that could be, when the
hygienist had pronounced it dead, he said that it could be darkened due
to an old injury rather than necrosis. He said he had examined the x-ray
with a magnifying glass and determined the tooth was fine. Margaret
remembered that she had injured her front teeth at age 13 when she went
head-first over her bike and landed on her mouth, splitting her lip
open. Only her braces saved her teeth from being knocked out. The
dentist said that trauma could cause the tooth to hemorrhage without
killing the tooth, and then the red blood cells would die, darkening the
tooth. Thanks to the dentist's expertise, Margaret was able to avoid an
unnecessary extraction.
So, what we have learned is:
Always get a second opinion for something
serious or if you are not getting a
resolution with your current
treatment plan.
Experience should be valued as much as any
degree or certification.
