The pet food recalls continue. The FDA has expanded its investigation of the
elevated levels of Vitamin D in dry dog foods, which can be toxic and cause
serious health problems. Currently, there are eight brands and twelve
different diets that have been recalled. The FDA found an alarming 70 times
the intended amount of vitamin D. To learn more about this recall, please

Life's Abundance pet food is affected by this recall.
The best "wholistic" suggestion to prevent
danger to your pet is - STOP feeding dry kibble food. In our
"wholistic" opinion, dry kibble food is the least nutritious form of
food to feed a carnivore. Furthermore, a majority of all pet food recalls is
with dry food. Canned food, freeze-dried food and raw food have a much lower

If you have
read our Pet Food web page, you
already know our basic tips for buying good holistic pet food. This
newsletter is based on a recent article in the Whole Dog
 Journal
(WDJ) entitled, "Get Wet!" (WholeDogJournal.com,
November 2018), about how to buy good holistic canned dog food. We
highly recommend subscribing to this very informative magazine, if
you are serious about your pet's holistic needs. Here is a summary
of the WDJ's article:
-
Do not
buy pet food at grocery stores—believe it or not, grocery
stores sell the most dog food than any other type of store.
Although it is convenient to pick up your pet's food at the same
store as your people food, grocery stores tend to carry the
cheapest and lowest quality food.
Local, independently-owned pet stores tend to have the
highest quality and most expensive pet food, for those
who want to buy the best all-natural
 and
most holistic food.
-
Do not
be influenced by the front of the label—pretty and
appetizing photos (appealing only to pet parents) of food on the
front of the label, does not guarantee the contents inside the
can. READ THE BACK LABEL for the ingredients. One pet food
manufacturer called its canned food "Bacon Cheeseburger Flavor."
Ingredients must be listed with the highest weight first. While
this flavor may sound very appetizing to the human buyer, here
is the real scoop from the Ingredients List on the back label:
beef is the 6th ingredient listed, bacon is the 11th and cheese
is the 13th. For a high-quality, holistic food, shouldn't beef
be the very 1st ingredient in the list, not
 the
6th?
-
Look
for the Nutritional Adequacy Statement—look for the terms
"complete and balanced" or for "supplemental or
intermittent feeding" on the label. If the label says
"supplemental or intermittent feeding," then do not feed this
every day. If you feed this food often, then you must supplement
what nutrients this brand is deficient in.
-
No
unnamed ingredients—such as "meat," "poultry," or "animal
fat." Instead, we would rather see beef, venison, turkey or
chicken fat clearly listed individually. These unnamed
ingredients could be "mystery meat" of unknown origin and
quality. Since your pet is a carnivore (cats are obligate
carnivores), we want to see a named meat (such as beef, chicken,
turkey, rabbit, pork, venison, bison) as the very first
ingredient, indicating it is the highest single ingredient
 by
weight in the can.

Guaranteed Analysis—since your pet is a carnivore, you want
the most meat protein and fat in the pet food and the least
amount of everything else. The average canned dog food contains
78–85% moisture, so look for the lowest amount of
moisture (which you are also paying for) in the Guaranteed
Analysis on the label. Your carnivorous pet has no dietary
requirement for carbohydrates (such as wheat, corn, soy, rice,
barley, oats, potatoes, millet, etc.). To figure out how much
carbohydrates are in your pet's food, do this simple
calculation, subtract from 100% the content of each of the
following: 100% - protein% - fat% - ash% - water% = carbohydrate
% content. Obviously, the lower the
 carbohydrate
% the better the food.
