Algae as Sunscreen

Do you routinely use sunscreen as the weather gets hotter? Did you know a single ounce of chemical sunscreen can contaminate 114 million gallons of ocean water? The chemical ingredient oxybenzone in most sunscreens leach the coral reef of its nutrients, bleaches it white and can also disrupt the development of fish and other wildlife in the area. Researchers estimate we have “lost at least 80 percent of the coral reefs in the Caribbean.”

New research by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals the chemicals commonly used in sunscreen are endocrine disruptors, estrogenic and may interfere with the thyroid and other hormone processes in the body. A recent EWG report shows oxybenzone may be considered an endocrine disruptor, can reduce sperm count in men and may contribute to endometriosis in women. What can one do to avoid this? Use algae as a natural sunscreen both on your skin and under your skin.

Marine algae and cyanobacteria naturally contain ultraviolet screening agents that protect the marine microbes from the sun. Sunscreen molecules called microsporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are small molecules derived from amino acids, thermally stable, and they absorb light in the ultraviolet region, protecting the microbial DNA from radiation damage. Using the MAAs from algae as a model, scientist have now synthesized and tested easier to make derivatives of these sunscreen compounds and found them to be most effective, more photostable than oxybenzone, do not react chemically and dissipate radiation thermally. “Ultraviolet screening agents derived from algal natural products can boost the sun protection factor of skin creams by a factor of more than two.” (February 1, 2017 - Algae Industry Magazine)
