Have you stopped taking (or giving to your
child/pet) a supplement only to have the symptoms return? Have you
started to feel better (or seen your child/pet get better) then
decreased a supplement because you thought you were healed or to save
money, only to have the symptoms come back? Based on our 90+ years of
“wholistic” living experience here are some reasons as to what may be
happening.
-
Isolated supplements only
treat the symptoms.
-
Not balancing the original cause of the symptom.
-
Not
taking enough to balance the whole body.
-
Not allowing enough time
for the body to heal.
Back in the 18th century, European
travelers crossing the Atlantic Ocean discovered if they drank fresh
lime
juice they did not get scurvy (a vitamin C deficiency resulting in
weakness and joint pain, internal hemorrhages, gums hemorrhaging, teeth
root break down). That is why British sailors were called ‘limeys’. It
was not until the 20th century, that scientists finally isolated the
beneficial nutrient in citrus fruits as Vitamin C. What is not commonly
known is by taking isolated Vitamin C in the form of an ascorbic acid
supplement one only
gets rid of the symptoms of scurvy. When the ascorbic acid supplement is
discontinued the symptoms and disease returns. However, if one gets
Vitamin C made from an extract of whole (food) green peppers not only do
the symptoms disappear but the scurvy is gone when discontinued. Vitamin
C from a whole food product contains rutin, bioflavonoids, Vitamin E,
selenium and zinc that Nature dictated is needed for Vitamin C to work
optimally in our body. All these complementary compounds are present in
whole food sources of Vitamin C (for example, green peppers, oranges,
rose hips, acerola cherries, algae). By taking only an isolated
supplement containing just ascorbic acid or by juicing an orange and
throwing away the pulp and peel, one is missing all the above necessary
nutrients. From our “wholistic” perspective this may be one reason why
the symptoms returned when you stopped taking (or giving to your
child/pet) an isolated supplement designed to just eliminate the
symptoms and not balance the WHOLE body.
A good analogy is the little Dutch boy
fable. Remember he puts his finger in the hole in the dike to stop the
water leak to save the town from flooding. What is wrong with that
picture? The boy’s finger must stay there forever because it is not a
permanent fix. So, when one takes (or gives a child/pet) an isolated
supplement to “fix” a symptom or in response to a deficiency based on a
single lab test, one is just supplementing the symptoms and not
balancing the whole body or addressing the cause. The isolated
supplement acts like a crutch and is only a
temporary “fix” to alleviate
the symptoms at best.
Many clients have glandular imbalances and
take drugs or supplements to augment their
adrenals or
thyroid
glands. While their symptoms do improve their body cannot do without
this crutch or they must take ever increasing dosages the longer they
take the drug or supplement. When they stop the isolated glandular
supplement (or drug) the symptoms return. From our ‘wholistic”
perspective, that is supplementing the symptoms. Since the adrenals and
thyroid are secondary glands, one needs to look higher up at the
primary
glands and organs in the brain to see if they might be the cause of the
deficiency. Consider this analogy: one has changed tires, balanced the
wheels and fixed all the body work after a car accident but the tires
continue to wear prematurely and unevenly (symptoms). It was not until a
front-end alignment (cause of the symptoms) was done that the problem
got fixed. Look at the body’s hierarchy and balance the primary cause
not just the location or body part (gland or organ) with the symptoms.
The body needs a certain minimum level of
nutrition to maintain optimum health. In Western medicine this is called
the minimum daily requirement (MDR) or recommended dietary allowance
(RDA) to keep healthy. So, if studies show a 60 pound body needs 3
capsules/day to meet the MDR or RDA, then an unhealthy body with
symptoms would naturally require more to become balanced. There is
frequently a
‘loading dosage’ or high therapeutic amount needed in the
beginning. Once the body is brought back into balance, then the daily
amount can be reduced down to a maintenance level. Unfortunately, most isolated
supplements only contain a high dosage of active ingredients to
eliminate the symptoms quickly. There is not enough complete whole food
nutrition to balance the WHOLE body so that it can stand on its own.
That is why we sell mostly whole food products that nourish and balance
ALL the glands and organs not isolated supplements to treat the
symptoms (Product A for arthritis, Product D for Diabetes, Product E for
the eyes, etc.). It does not matter whether an imbalanced body has
arthritis,
diabetes,
high blood pressure,
high cholesterol,
autoimmune blood
disease, lipomas (fatty tumors),
chronic renal failure or
even cancer, we
would still suggest the same whole food product for all these symptoms.
In our fast-food, instant gratification
society everyone wants fast results. If we take an antibiotic for 10
days and our symptoms are not gone, we want something stronger. But is
10 days enough time for the body to heal an infection? Consider the
chart below showing the
regeneration time
for the following body parts:
Body Part |
Time |
Skin
|
28 days |
Red Blood
Cells |
4 months (120 days) |
Liver |
5 months |
Intestines |
6 months |
Bones |
10 years |
Brain |
6 months - 5...10+ years |
If one has
inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
and takes a product for 30 days to make the symptoms go
away, is it
surprising then that the symptoms return when the product is discontinued?
According to the above chart, Nature designed intestinal cells to
regenerate every 6 months. It would be unrealistic to expect the body to
replace every dysfunctional IBD cell in the intestines in 30 days. One
must take a holistic product longer than 6 months, well after the
symptoms are gone, in order to expect a truly “wholistic” balanced body
so that the symptoms do not return. This is what we call 'healing the
body from within' or 'from the top>down' rather than supplementing the
symptoms. An absence of symptoms does not mean the body is in balance
(“healed”).
So, if we (or our child/pet) have an
absence of symptoms and feel great after taking a supplement for
30
days why are we disappointed when the symptoms come back? We are
following the only healing paradigm we know: the Western allopathic
medical model. When we have an infection we go get a prescription and
take it for 10 days. If our infection comes back, we go get a stronger
one or a lab test to get a specific antibiotic matched to our infection
that will work better and get rid of the symptoms. If we have an absence
of symptoms after taking the second prescription, does that mean we are
healed and our body is back in balance? Some holistic practitioners will
tell you, No; you have
just pushed the infection deeper into your body. At some point in the
future, when your body’s resistance is lowered, it will resurface. Go
back to the Vitamin C/whole food green pepper study above. When the body
gets ALL the nutrients it needs (not just ascorbic acid) and given
enough time, it will heal (balance) itself.
Most of us have only known the allopathic
medicine paradigm — the Western medical principle of
introducing
a substance into the body to produce an effect. This is clearly the
substance/product doing the “healing” work. We are given scientific
proof in the form of double-blind placebo studies and peer-reviewed
research papers to prove a product’s efficacy. These studies are done by
isolating (through extraction or concentration) the suspected active
ingredient that eliminates the symptoms. The studies then can tell us
the minimum daily requirement to produce effects, therapeutic dosage
needed to eliminate symptoms and the toxic amount. While these studies
work well for drugs and isolated supplements one cannot use this to judge a
true holistic product’s efficacy. A true "wholistic" product should do
more than just eliminate the symptoms. A "wholistic" product should
balance the WHOLE body not just the
gland, organ or location where the symptoms exist. The high initial
amount needed to eliminate the symptoms can ideally be reduced so as not
to create a dependency on the product (like drugs and supplements).
While this may not be possible in every case because of mitigating
factors (for example, genetic predisposition, history of poor diet, bad
lifestyle habits, chronic illness) it is Optimum Choices' goal to
educate you so you can approach Freedom From Illness. We believe true “wholistic” wellness is more
than just the absence of symptoms.
STOP
supplementing the symptoms and balance the WHOLE body with
WHOLE food products for
optimum health.
