Pet Food RecallsThe pet food recalls continue. The best "wholistic" suggestion to prevent danger to your pet is — STOP feeding dry kibble dog food. In our "wholistic" opinion, dry kibble dog food is the least nutritious form of food to feed a carnivore. Furthermore, a majority of all pet food recalls is with dry food. Canned food, freeze-dried food and raw food have a much lower percentage of recalls. To read more on our "wholistic" philosophy on pet food, go to the following links:

********************************************************************************* Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) and PhosphorusIf your pet has Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) or Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), please see your veterinarian first for proper treatment. We offer the following “wholistic” nutritional lessons from our experience, so you might have more options for your CRF pet. Limiting phosphorus in a CRF pet’s diet has been shown to improve the kidney symptoms. That is because a CRF body is not as efficient at processing phosphorus (meat is high in phosphorus), so it accumulates. But from our “wholistic” perspective that is a one-dimensional approach that just addresses the symptoms and does nothing to balance the WHOLE body for more complete wholistic care and better quality of life. It is like hiring a tennis coach who only teaches you the overhand serve (one dimension) and forehand (two dimensions) strokes. Yes, you can be a good tennis player and win some games but you will not be a complete champion and consistently win in tournaments without knowing the backhand stroke. The overhand serve is like Western medicine's ability to accurately diagnose the disease (Chronic Renal Failure or Chronic Kidney Disease) with their lab tests (blood work and urinalysis) and scanning ability (x-rays and ultrasound). The forehand stroke is like Western medicine's ability to quickly reduce or eliminate the obvious symptoms (by reducing the phosphorus and protein in the diet, subcutaneous fluids). Based on our 90+ years of “wholistic” experience, we desire to give our pets the best chance for a longer life with less suffering by providing a more complete championship "wholistic” solution with a three dimensional approach. By using the following “wholistic” lessons, one is adding the backhand stroke (third dimension) to a pet’s CRF or CKD care by balancing ALL the glands and organs (not just the kidneys) for more complete care and what we hope is a better quality and longer life. By limiting the amount of meat protein (high phosphorus content) in a carnivore’s diet, one is denying pets the #1 source of nutrition for a carnivore. Many pet parents tell us they have a hard time getting their pet to eat a low-protein diet. Is there any wonder why? The food does not smell like the meat-rich food Nature designed carnivores to eat. Obviously, if the kidney symptoms are severe or the phosphorus levels are dangerously high, one must follow their vet’s advice. Here are some wholistic points to consider. One “wholistic” way to make phosphorus in meat more absorbable and utilized is to make sure the calcium to phosphorus ratio is the same as Nature intended. Nature meant wild carnivores to crunch up the bones of their prey, in addition to eating the meaty parts. This naturally supplied the proper calcium (from bones) to phosphorus (from fleshy meat) ratio for proper absorption. But processed pet food manufacturers usually supplement pet food’s calcium content artificially with isolated supplements. Research shows absorption of nutrients from isolated supplements is in the 20-25% range, while absorption from whole food sources is 90-95%. We always buy frozen raw pet food with the ground up bones and organ meat (source of amino acids) already included. This is closer to the naturally-sourced nutrient ratio Nature intended. Our last CRF cat lived to be 21 and CRF dog 18 years old. Neither was on a low protein or phosphorus restricted diet or given phosphorus binders. Both were fed a raw food diet up until their last years, with no restriction in phosphorus. While not scientific proof, we leave it up to each pet parent and their vet to decide how best to feed their kidney-challenged pet. Another source of calcium are algae. Animals naturally get algae in the wild since it is in every natural body of water, in the soil and on plants. Bio-algae concentrates contain more per gram of naturally occurring calcium than cow's milk with higher bioavailability and zero toxicity. Bio-algae concentrates also contain calcium spirulan, a form of calcium that has extraordinary properties. In studies, calcium spirulan is shown to inhibits HIV at very low concentrations by preventing the virus from penetrating the human cell membrane and infecting the cell. In that sense, calcium spirulan is an antioxidant. Another “wholistic” option is to increase the efficiency of the kidneys, stomach, pancreas, intestines, liver, etc. for more complete digestion so the body may be able to digest and tolerate normal levels of phosphorus in meat. This could result in regenerating and rebuilding previously lost kidney function. By adding a native superfood microalgae with over 5,000 individual nutrients to your pet’s diet, one may nutritionally normalize ALL the glands and organs, not just the kidneys. With a more complete digestion any weight loss may be delayed. One client saw this overall normalization effect in less than two months (see Brindee’s lab test) of adding bio-algae concentrates. If all the body’s systems are more balanced, the body may be able to process the normal phosphorus content of meat, even raw meat. CRF pets tend to get finicky taste buds in their latter kidney stages. We and many pet guardians have purchased every flavor in the pet store in an effort to find something our CRF-challenged pets will eat. By balancing ALL the glands (the master gland-pituitary, pineal, hypothalamus, pancreas, amygdala-sense of smell, etc.) and organs (kidneys, liver, stomach, intestines, olfactory bulb in the nose=for better scent detection, etc.) one may be able to keep their pet’s normal taste buds for longer and avoid having to spend a fortune on pet food in an attempt to find a palatable flavor. We hope these “wholistic” lessons we learned will give you a three-dimensional approach to give your CRF-challenged pet a better quality and longer life like we have enjoyed with our CRF pets (cat to 21 years old and dog to 18 years old).
